Quest 49: Monster Parts Cookies

Ever wonder what happens to all the enemies that Link defeats? Well their parts are most likely scattered around Hyrule and they are starting to stack up. So today was are going to take some of those parts and make monster cookies. Enjoy!

 Gear!
1 1/2 cups chunky peanut butter
1 cup packed dark brown sugar
1 cup  sugar
8 tablespoons butter, softened
3 large eggs
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
4 1/2 cups quick cooking oats
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 cup semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips
1 cup M&M's plain chocolate candies
1/3 cup sweetened chipped coconut
candied eyes, claws, teeth beaks - really whatever you have

Quest!

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In a mixing bowl, put together peanut butter, sugar, brown sugar and butter. Mix together until combined.
Mix in eggs, vanilla and baking soda.
Until creamy!
Add in your mix-ins: M&Ms, coconut and dark chocolate chips is what we used.
Mix in oatmeal until well combined.
Spoon 1 inch balls of dough onto a parchment lined sheet pan. Add your candy eyes, teeth, breaks, claws, etc. to each cookie.
Once they look somewhat like this bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown around the edges.
Cool on a cooling rack after baking and Enjoy!

Quest 42: Loftwing Nests

Skyward Sword is a great game. The idea that an entire society can live hundreds of miles above the rest of the world and no one notices takes the idea of Laputa: Castle in the Sky to a whole different level. Have you ever wondered about where the Loftwings go at night? You can't fly around, so they must go to sleep somewhere. Well today, we are going to make Loftwing nests to give them somewhere to sleep. These are a little time consuming, but not terribly difficult to make. They look super fancy and would certainly dress up any Mario Party or other Zeldathon that you may be planning to entertain your friends. Enjoy!

8 oz. Hard Cheese such as Parmesan - buy a chunk, not the pre-shredded
Cookie Sheet
Microplane
Offset Spatula
Muffin Tin or small cups
Silicone Mat
1 cup Mini Mozzarella Balls
1/4 cup Fresh Basil Leaves
1 cup Grape Tomatoes cut in half - I used both red and yellow
3 oz. Prosciutto Ham, cut into small ribbons
2 T. Garlic Olive Oil
1 T. Balsamic Vinegar
salt and pepper to taste

The Quest!

Preheat the oven to 400 degree F. Place your silicone mat onto your cookie sheet. Using the microplane, shred your cheese making round shapes for your nests.

Bake your nests for about 5 minutes or until just starting to brown.




Remove from oven and let the cheese sit for 1-2 minutes to let the cheese cool. Place on the back of the muffin tin or cups using an offset spatula. Form to the shape of the cups. Set aside to cool completely.





Let's make the salad! This part is super easy. in a bowl, add your drained mozzarella balls (if they are larger-quarter them), grape tomatoes, prosciutto and mix them together. Tear your basil into small pieces and add them to the bowl. Toss this mixture with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Salt and pepper to taste. That's it!




Put it all together by taking your cheese nest and spooning a reasonable amount to the salad into the cheese. Line them up on a platter and enjoy!

Quest 40: Snapper Den!

Today's quest takes us deep into Woodfall where we find ourselves among the Snappers. These devilish turtles spin themselves around in order to knock us down and keeping us from reaching our goals. Therefore, we shall make a nummy treat of these Snappers that will make you lick your fingers clean!. These turtles would also be fun for a Mario Party or other video game themed get together. Enjoy!

6 oz. Royal Blue Candy Melts
6 oz. Dark Chocolate Candy Melts
3 oz. White Candy Melts
1/8 cup Caramel Sundae Sauce
1/2 cup Whole Pecans
1/2 cup Whole Walnuts
Silicone Mat or Parchment Paper
1/4 Measuring Spoon
Disposable Measuring Spoon


The Quest!

Arrange your nuts in a star pattern on  a silicone mat or parchment paper.







In a double boiler, melt the dark chocolate candy melts until just melted.







Spoon the chocolate over the arranged nuts to create the base of the candy. Let set up for a few minutes.







Taking the hot water from the double boiler, dip a 1/4 teaspoon into the hot water to warm the spoon and scoop out a ball of caramel sauce. Place the caramel ball onto each of the candies and let the chocolate set up completely.





Melt the royal blue candy melts in a double boiler until just melted. Spoon over the turtles to form the shell of the turtle. Let set up completely.






In a disposable icing bag, add the white melting candies. Place on a paper plate and microwave for a minute. Note: I checked mine every 30 seconds and still ended up with a small hole melted into the bag. Candy will be hot, so caution.





Snip off the very end of the bag and pipe a ring around the edge of each turtle.







Once this is completed, use any remaining to create designs on the shell. Let set up before serving.

Quest 19: Frozen Banana Thwomp Pops




It's August in Northern Minnesota. Today is 90 degrees F which means there is no way I am going to heat up my kitchen. So, today's quest is appropriately freezer based. Also, I have bananas that are starting to get ripe and I thought I could get a two for one deal on this one. Anyways, for those not familiar with Thwomps, these crazy one-eyed looking things lurk in caves mostly in the Game Boy versions of LoZ (Link's Awakening, Oracle of Ages and Seasons). Similar to the two eyed blue versions you see looking to squish the Mario Bros. these work on the same premise with one difference: you can ride on top of these! A little creepy looking, but certainly delicious, I know you and your kids will enjoy making these pops, even on the hottest of days.






Gear for the Quest!
2-3 ripe bananas
lollipop sticks
a gallon freezer bag
A piece of wax paper 2x the size of the freezer bag
knife and cutting board
Chopped Nuts - I used Pecans! Note: if you are allergic to nuts, you can substitute sprinkles
Candy Eyes - Target sells them in the cake decorating aisle.
3 oz Semi-Sweet Chocolate
1 T. Butter
Rubber Spatula

The Quest!

Fold your piece of waxed paper in half and place it inside the freezer bag.









 Peel your bananas. With a sharp knife, cut your bananas into two inch pieces - they should be squarish in size.








Place your lollipop sticks into each banana piece.








 Place the bananas into the freezer bag between the sheets of waxed paper. Place the bag in the freezer for about 2 hours.








Chop your nuts!










 In a microwave safe bowl, place your 3 oz. of chocolate and 1 T of butter on high for 30 seconds. Stir and microwave for another 30 seconds.
Stir until smooth - you should not have to microwave further.





Working quickly, use a rubber spatula to coat the banana pops. Then immediately dip into your nuts. You have to work quickly because the chocolate will make a hard shell because the bananas are frozen, but I think you knew this already.


Attach a candy eye. You may have to dip the back of the eye in melted chocolate in order to get it to stick. You can additional embellishments like large chocolate sprinkles for the mouth. When you are done decorating enjoy right away or place them back into the freezer bag and into the freezer.
